Dannebrog. According to the legend, on 15 June 1219 the Danish flag fell from heaven during a battle in present-day Estonia, helping the Danish army to an unexpected victory. Presently in Tallinn the Danish King's Garden in Old Town is marked with a memorial and information signs introducing the Dannebrog legend. The word "Dannebrog" means "the cloth of the Danes".
Anthem. Denmark has the unique distinction of having two national anthems. The first, "Kong Christian stod ved højen mast", serves as the royal anthem. It is primarily used during occasions related to the Danish royal family and military, commemorating the valor of Danish sailors during conflicts with Sweden in the 17th and 18th centuries.
The second anthem is "Der er et yndigt land", which functions as the civil national anthem. The Danish Golden Age poet Adam Oehlenschläger called Denmark "a lovely land" in 1819 in the poem that later became Denmark's national anthem and is still sung loudly at football matches across the country. This anthem is typically played at public events, celebrating the beauty and spirit of Denmark.
